Vital Vittles and Organics
Back in 1976, when Kass and Joe Schwin started Vital Vittles, not many folks knew what organic foods were, let alone were eating organic foods. But Kass and Joe were dedicated to organics and Vital Vittles has continued that dedication to this day. Why? Because organic foods are more nutritious, and because organic agriculture is kinder to the environment. All Vital Vittles breads are certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). We also show our concern for the environment by the way we operate our bakery. Vital Vittles is a Bay Area Green Business, certified by the Alameda County Green Business Program.
Vital Vittles and Whole Grains
All Vital Vittles breads and sweets are 100% whole grain. That means they include all three parts of the grainó bran, endosperm and germ. Thatís why our breads are more nutritious and flavorful. Studies have shown that a healthy lifestyle that includes a diet rich in whole grain foods can contribute to better health, and may even reduce your risk of developing diabetes. What makes Vital Vittles breads special is that we use freshly-milled flour. That is flour milled on our original (1976) stone mill no longer than 36 hours before we bake. Whole grain flour is not shelf stable. So, to avoid rancidity, millers must filter out part of the wheat germ from the flour they sell to bread bakers. By milling our own flour, we can guarantee that nothing is removed. All of our breads provide the full flavor and nutrition of 100% whole grains.
